How we work
The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation supports women in times of war and conflict in order to increase their power and influence. The key to our way of working is cooperation and knowledge sharing, as well as the conviction that women’s organisations themselves are the best judges of what they need in order to develop.
By supporting women’s organisations in conflict and post-conflict zones, Kvinna till Kvinna contributes to the development of their work in promoting gender equality, human rights, and peace and security. Women’s participation and decision-making, at various levels and in different sectors of society, is fundamental to increase their power, which in turn contributes to democratic and peaceful progress.
Kvinna till Kvinna’s work method is based on four pillars:
1. Partnership based on common goals and values
Our partner organisations are all dedicated to women’s rights and participate in the work on democracy and sustainable peace. The organisations also have to be open to making contacts across the boundaries of a conflict and must base their operations on transparency, accountability and democracy. Kvinna till Kvinna aims to promote a diverse women’s movement and to select partners that vary in size, expertise, thematic focus and so on.
2. Local ownership
We believe that our partner organisations themselves are best suited to determine strategy. They set their own agendas by identifying problems and solutions. This also reflects our conviction that sustainable peace can only be built by the people living in the area concerned. Kvinna till Kvinna’s role is to have a close dialogue with the organisations, with the purpose of building capacity, giving inspiration, sharing knowledge and facilitating contacts. We work with qualified field workers, regularly meet our partner organisations and also take part in some of their activities.
3. Long-term core support and capacity development
A stable funding situation is essential for women’s organisations to be able to develop their identity and capacity. Kvinna till Kvinna’s long-term core support stabilises our partner organisations, which allows them to develop their organisational skills, pursue their own agenda, and build a structure with the potential to become sustainable. In this process it is fundamental that we have an ongoing dialogue and monitor the challenges the organisations face along the way.
Kvinna till Kvinna constantly works to facilitate networking between our partner organisations. They come from many different countries and contexts and the possibility of sharing information and supporting each other in developing visions, strategic thinking and coordination with or towards other actors, benefits both their internal processes and their external outreach activities. In conflict zones, Kvinna till Kvinna supports efforts to create spaces where partner organisations can meet in a safe environment and network across conflict borders. These meetings challenge isolationist policies, fear and hatred.
